Clothing size: how to choose the right one
To find the perfect size for your The North Face clothing, please measure your body, compare them to the size chart, and consider how you plan to wear the item (over a T-shirt, with a fleece, or with a warm jacket). For the most accurate fit, please contact a manager or call +380 800 350 277 .
What and how to measure
- Chest - the tape runs along the largest part of the chest, parallel to the floor, do not tighten.
- Waist – natural waistline (just above the navel), tape tightly but without squeezing.
- Hips are the widest part of the thighs and buttocks.
- Sleeve length - from the base of the neck along the shoulder to the wrist with the arm slightly bent.
- Height helps to determine the fit of the garment and pants length.
- Inseam – from the crotch to the bottom of the leg.
Tip: Measure in the evening – your measurements will be closer to your actual measurements during the day. Use a flexible measuring tape and record the measurement in centimeters.
Comparison method with your clothes
Pick a favorite item with a similar fit:
- Lay it out on a flat surface, measure the width across the chest (from armpit to armpit), multiply by 2 – you get the girth.
- Compare with the bust measurement in the size chart of the model you plan to purchase.
Example: fleece width is 56 cm ⇒ chest circumference is 112 cm. Choose the size where the recommended chest circumference is 110–114 cm (including some room).
Ease depending on the type of item
| Type | Recommended stock | When to choose more/less |
|---|---|---|
| Base layer (T-shirts, long sleeves) | +2–4 cm to chest circumference | More for a looser fit; less for a more fitted fit. |
| Middle layer (fleece, skinny, sweatshirts) | +6–8 cm | More - if you wear it under a jacket and want a comfortable layered combination |
| Top layer (jackets, down jackets, parkas) | +8–12 cm | More for active wear and thicker layers; less for a more urban, fitted fit. |
| Trousers (waist) | +2–4 cm to waist circumference | Consider your individual fit: waist vs. hip |
Fits and lengths
- Slim – closer to the body, minimal allowance; for a base layer or urban style.
- Regular – a universal fit for everyday wear; comfortable allowance without being oversized.
- Relaxed/Loose – a loose fit designed for layering or casual style.
Some trousers come in different lengths ( Short/Regular/Long ). Choose based on your height and inseam measurement.
Jackets and down jackets: how not to miss the mark
- If you plan to wear it over a fleece/hoodie, choose a half size larger than the base size.
- For active movement (hiking, skiing) , freedom in the shoulders and sleeves is important – check the forward/upward movements of your arms.
- The sleeve length should cover the wrist even when moving; the bottom of the jacket should cover the belt.
Fleeces and skinny
- Keep in mind that fleece is bulkier than cotton: leave a 6–8 cm allowance around the chest.
- For a slim oversize, go up one size larger than usual if you want a loose, expressive silhouette.
Trousers
- Measure your waist and hips and compare with the model table.
- Check the inseam – the length of the inside seam determines whether the trousers will be short/too long.
Common mistakes
- Height/weight reference only, no measurements included - different styles may have different fits.
- Measuring "by clothes on the body" adds centimeters and distorts the result.
- Ignoring the layering plan - the top layer must "accommodate" the base layers.
Manufacturer's tolerance: possible deviations along the seams of ~±1–2 cm are normal for textiles.
